WALTHAM WINDER – 26 MILE ROUTE - NEW for 2007

Please note, detailed instructions will be provided on the day

The route will have specific red arrow marker signs and tape to help you to find your way and countdown signs (3-2-1) for the last 3 miles. Where route combine, black arrows will be used with green, red or blue spots on them.

Up High Street bear right at the top towards Stonesby and right again across the cattle grid in the direction of Garthorpe. About 1.5km (approx 1 mile) down this lane follow the footpath off to the right. The route then follows the footpath to the outskirts of Freeby. From Freeby the route goes off to the left heading towards Saxby. Before the village of Saxby the footpath goes off to the left heading back in the direction of Waltham. After about 1.5km (approx 1mile) turn right along the track to Sproxton. (Checkpoint 1) Go up School Hill, turn right and follow the footpath to Buckminster Proceed to road and then turn left, passing Buckminster Hall on your left. At the water tower take the footpath off to the left, about 0.35km (1/4mile) down this route the footpath divides, take the track to the right and follow this to Skillington. As you enter the village of Skillington take the first road off to the left follow this until you see the Church beyond the village green, here turn left onto the Sproxton Road. After about 0.35km (1/4mile) take the footpath off to the right to Saltby airfield (Checkpoint 2) Follow the path around the airfield, (do not take the Viking way that goes off to the right). At the end of this footpath turn left towards Saltby. Go straight ahead at the Xroads, and about 0.25km (250yds) turn right after phone box, between houses, follow this footpath across the fields until you come to a fork. Take the left hand fork and go past new reservoir to pass woodland on left. Follow the footpath until you reach the Croxton road, here turn left and go along the road for 0.25km (250yds) yds, turn left here following the footpath with a small woodland on your right. The footpath follows the line of hedge for 1.25km (0.78miles) at this point take the footpath (through hole in hedge) towards Croxton Kerrial. When you reach the village of Croxton, cross over the A607 opp. pub and go left along the side of the road turning right opposite the pump along a wet track, this track then meets a rough road where you turn left, follow this track all the way until Checkpoint 3 just before the village of Branston. Turn left at the checkpoint and follow the footpath which takes you up the hill back up to the A607, cross the A607 and follow the footpath down into the park and until you come to the estate road here turn right and follow the rough track to Mary Lane (Checkpoint 4). Follow Bescaby Lane. to Waltham. Please note that all distances are approximate
